A Large filling replaces 50% of the tooth structure.

There are other factors that are also evaluated, but a rule of thumb is 50% = onlay or 3/4 crown.

The onlay or 3/4 crown is made of ceramic material that is very similar to tooth enamel.

Amalgam or cavity? Now what?!

When we remove amalgam fillings from teeth, there are many factors to consider in restoring the tooth back to optimum health.

Size of the cavity:

Small,with lots of good tooth structure surrounding it-a good restoration for this type of cavity would be a composite (non-metallic) tooth-colored filling. The following pictures are an example of a tooth that is easily restored from an amalgam filling to a composite (non-metallic) filling, from start to the final composite filling:

The photo you see is my assistant, patient and myself removing an amalgam filling. Mercury has a low boiling point and can give off vapors if ground out of the tooth. I believe the protocal we use greatly reduces the risk of creating toxic gases.
